Our
harvesting operation began in the early 1960's. Combines then had no cab
or air conditioning or radio. I learned about harvesting on a 1953 John
Deere 55 with a 14 ft header. We had two of those combines and helped
neighbors after we finished ours. In 1967, we changed to 1967 JD 95's.
Operated those until 1976 when combines were in short supply and was able
to get a new JD 6600. Two years later, we traded for a 78 7700. Then in
1982 we purchased a new 8820. As our work increased, the need for larger
equipment did too. In 1996, our 8820 was traded for a 9600, then in 99,
it was traded for a 9610. In 2000, it was traded for a 2000 9650STS.
Today, we use one
9650STS and supporting equipment and begin harvesting in North Central
Texas or Southern
Oklahoma working our way back to Kay County. We work with a couple of
neighbors and sometimes will take 4 or 5 combines if there is enough work.
When we finish harvesting in the home area we stop. Our Attention turns
to summer crops and seed cleaning.
